Grand Knight’s Message

Brothers,

Not much took place during the month of January.  The Christmas lights, trees and lighted deer were taken down.  All were placed in storage above the garage at the rectory.  Thank you to those Brother Knights and families who were out in the pouring rain on that day.  The Council held its second annual retreat at St. Frederick’s in Kingston.  A small turnout of 10 Brother Knights attended along with Father Mike.  We reflected on the 5 program categories which are Church, Community, Family, Youth, and Council.  The next retreat will be in January 2007.  I hope that we can double the attendance then.  District Deputy Ron Metevier, Dave Biron and I attended the Quarterly Meeting.  A report will be given at the next Business Meeting.

February is now upon us with many activities and projects before us.   Please look at the list of activities in this newsletter and contact the person who is chairing that program.  Our first activity is the Blood Drive on February 7.  Ron Metevier 895-2889 is the Chair for this project and is looking for a Co-chair to work with him on the September Blood drive.  This is a good time for those who have been in the Council for a few years or more to step up to the plate and get involved in helping out with projects.  Once again we are hosting the St Joseph Valentine’s Day Dance on February 11.  Mike Annis 895-4713 and John Ste. Marie 895-0993 are the Co-Chairs.  The following weekend is the 2nd Annual Winter-fest.  We are still going to host this event even if there is little or no snow.  The snow sculpturing is the only event affected by the amount of snow we have.  There are still other activities that will take place on Saturday which are broom ball, volley ball, snow shoe obstacle course, cribbage tournament, crafts for the children, bonfire, karaoke, and a dance.  If the snow sculpture does take place, at noon time on Sunday we will have a luncheon put on by the Hospitality group followed by giving out awards for the snow sculptures.  The Knights will be cooking hotdogs and hamburgers for lunch on Saturday.  As you can see there is a lot to be done for Winter-fest and lots of helping hands are needed.  Please call Dave Biron 642-8970 or John Ste. Marie 895-0993 to find out where you can help out.  The final program for the month is the Senior Appreciation Dinner which is scheduled for February 26.  Mike Annis 895-4713 is the person to contact.

Thank you Brother Knights that took the time to fill out the Fraternal Survey form.  A better response than last year.  It still befuddles me why we cannot get more of these surveys returned each year.  Yes it does take some time to figure things out, but this form is required by Supreme that “All” Brother Knights are to fill out this form.

We are getting close to the State Convention.  All Programs Reports must be in by the end of February so that they can be sent to the State Council no later than March 19.  Help is needed in putting the Scrap Book together for the State Convention.  Nancy Metevier 895-2889 and Judy Annis 895-4713 have been doing this themselves for several years now and have done an excellent job.  We have won several 1st place plaques in past years.  We need to have Brother Knights and/or their wives help with this project.   Please give them a call.

A reminder to those receiving the Knightly News by mail, you can get the newsletter by e-mail.  Contact Jim Gray 887-1755 to give him your e-mail address.  By doing this you help out keeping the cost down for the letters sent by regular mail.  Jim also takes care of our website.  Thanks Jim for taking on the task of taking care of our website.

At the Retreat we had a discussion on the yearly programs the Council does.  One program in particular was the Adopt-a-highway which is Chaired by Dan Bennis.  He would like to step down from chairing this project.  A question was brought up if we should discontinue this program as it seems not many Brothers show up to help.  I wanted to get this in the newsletter so that a discussion and decision could be made at the next business meeting.  If the Council decides to continue with the program we need to have a new Chairperson.

Let us all pray the Rosary as often as we can. The Power of Mary’s help cannot be denied. Please pray for our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI, World Peace, and all our military personnel around the world, our Parish Priest and Chaplain Fr. Mike Taylor, all our priests and all our Brother Knights.

FOURTH DEGREE NEWS

As you may know, the Fourth Degree ceremony this year is early, taking place on Saturday, April 22nd. Please let your Faithful Navigator know as soon as possible if you plan to take your Fourth Degree, so that all arrangements can be made well ahead of time.

For those of you that may have not heard, a Seventh Trumpet Mass is now being celebrated at St. Joseph's Cathedral in Manchester once a month to pray for Vocations. Over 1,000 people turned out for the first Mass in January, with 26 Knights in regalia. Father Jason's dream is to have 144, 000 people attend one of these Masses or 1,000 a month for twelve years. We would like to have 2 Knights in regalia from our Assembly to attend each month. The schedule is Feb 26, March 19, April 30, May 21, June 18, July 16, August 20, Sept.17, Oct. 15, Nov.19 and Dec. 17 for this year. Please see Dave Hamilton or Mike Annis to schedule a month to attend. Information for this Mass is posted on the State's website.

God Bless,

Dave Hamilton,F.N.

Rather Remarkable Obituary:

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Mr. Common Sense. Mr. Sense had been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such value lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm and that life isn't always fair. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not kids, are in charge).

His health began to rapidly deteriorate when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. - Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Mr. Sense declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student; but, could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Finally, Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense finally gave up the ghost after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, she spilled a bit in her lap, and was awarded a huge financial settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by two stepbrothers; My Rights and Ima Whiner. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.
