MARCH 2010

Grand Knight’s Message

Brothers,

Hello, I hope everyone has their power back from that terrible windstorm!!

We had a First Degree on February 18th, and I would like to welcome Elvis Perez and Kevin Maille.  There will be a Third Degree in Nashua, NH on March 7th, and a Fourth Degree on May 15th.  Anyone who wishes to make their Fourth Degree and who is available on this date can call me (679-1184) or John Ste. Marie (895-0993) for more info.

The State Convention is on April 30th-May 1st-2nd .  If you want to attend The Convention, call me at 679-1184.

Every Friday night during Lent we will be having a fish dinner at 5:30pm in parish hall.   I would like to thank Mike Annis and all who cooked and served at the Senior dinner. It was a great time and we had quite a few Seniors. Everyone I asked had a great time and said the food was delicious!  The Knights will be putting on a live stationsof the cross with soup and bread to follow, on March 26th at 6:00pm. Everyone’s invited so come and join us.  I would like to thank Judy Annis and Claire Gagnon and all who helped putting together the Knight’s yearly scrap book. Judy and Claire have dedicated many hours creating this scrap book. They meet every week to work on it. They could use some more help with sorting pictures and putting the book together. Without the Knights scrap book many memories of the projects, socials, and just the people and good times together would be lost.          If you can help these ladies out, call Judy Annis at 895-4713.  Help to make our scrap book the best in the state!

 Vivat Jesus,

Rick Cabral GK

                                                             COUNCIL NEWS

Rick Cabral thanked Peter Hubby, Mike Annis and Bob Faust for attending the Quarterly meeting on January 30th since he was too sick to attend. Father Aggie is the honoree for the State Convention this year. The Knights of Columbus have donated $150 million to various charities, 68.7 million hours volunteering and have 1.57 million members. Currently the State Kidney fund is helping 25 patients. Per capita dues from the State is $532.50 and from Supreme $472.17. Liability insurance of $314 is due. The State Convention is April 30th to May 2nd in Nashua, contact Rick at 679-1184 if you are attending as the Council is trying to get a table for all those attending from our Council. The deadline for reserving a room for the convention is April 16th and April 20th is the deadline for a meal reservation, which is $43 per person. There is a Second Degree at our Council on February 25th and a Third Degree on March 7th in Nashua.

Fish dinners for Lent will be starting soon, call John Ste. Marie at 895-0993 if you can help. Attendance at the Squires dinner was light, about 40 to 50 people. Thanks to John Nasser, the Squires and Genesis for pitching in and helping. Valentine's Day probably affected attendance.

The Squires will be having a membership drive as many of the older Squires will be moving on this year.

Mike Annis presented Elvis Perez and Kevin Maille as candidates for Council membership, they were accepted and there will be a First degree on February 18th at 7:00 PM  Dave Biron presented an article on Oakland Athletics' player Grant Desme who has decided to leave baseball and become a priest. John Nasser and the Trustees have nothing to report. Mike Annis said help is needed at the admissions meetings. Peter Hubby said program reports need to be turned in by March 15th. Mike Annis reported the Senior Appreciation dinner is February 21st and help is needed cooking turkeys, making homemade desserts and serving and cleaning up. Please contact Mike at 895-4713 if you can help. Mike turned in $438 from the fuel assistance dinner proceeds. John Ste. Marie said the Fish Fry dinners start February 19th. Ron Metevier said help is needed putting up signs for the blood drive on February 23rd in Epping, Fremont and Raymond. Also, jackets are ready. Mark Hausmann reported that the trip to Washington for the Right to Life march went well and that the parish Pro-life committee is getting very active. He is looking for someone to chair the Palm Sunday pancake breakfast this year. Bob Faust wants to start the Adopt a Highway program again and he is willing to chair it, call him at 895-3423.  Under new business Leo talked about a group looking for old electronic products and they pay for recovery of parts and that this would be a Green fundraiser campaign. Motion was made to table for further investigation. Mike Annis motioned to add $62 to the Fuel assistance money to make a total of $500 donated, seconded and passed. Mike Annis motioned that the Freedom Cup is looking for a donation, during the discussion it was mentioned that this is better handled by the Fourth Degree so it was sent to them. The motion was then withdrawn. Ron Metevier motioned to pay for the food packages for the delegates to the State convention, which are $124 each, the actual amount paid will depend on whether the delegates attend for the entire weekend or only part of the convention, seconded and passed. Paul Bernard motioned that we coordinate our efforts for the Food Pantry with the Epping Church Food Pantry. He will work with Bob Faust on this project.

Bob Faust mentioned that March 29th is Founders Day and there is a bus from Nashua to Hartford for that event. Supreme is looking for Fourth Degree members in Regalia. The trip cost $30 per person and does not include lunch. Contact Bob at 895-3423 if interested in going.

The Fourth Degree had nothing to report.

Father Von reported there is a drought in the Holy Land, please pray for rain there. Ash Wednesday is February 17th, Confirmation is April 15th. Thanks for getting the decorations down. Paul Arsenault reported a balance at the end of Jan. 2010 of $4008.86, Committed Funds are $3804.72 leaving a Net of $204.14. DISTRICT DEPUTY REPORT

District Deputy Dave Hamilton said the Quarterly meeting was well attended. If more Tootsie Rolls are needed they should be ordered by March 15th. For the State convention, the State is looking for the names of service members and any deceased members within the last year. At the meeting it was brought up that the Knights of Columbus is a Fraternal organization not a charitable one. This is being looked into. There will be a third degree in April. The Fourth Degree will be holding its Biannual meeting in Penacook March 14th. A Fourth Degree will be held May 15th in Jaffrey.

THE HUMOROUS SIDE

Lost on a rainy Friday night, a priest stumbles into a monastery and requests shelter there. Fortunately, he's just in time for dinner and was treated to the best fish and chips he's ever had.

After dinner, he goes into the kitchen to thank the chefs. He is met by two brothers, "Hello, I'm Brother Michael, and this is Brother Francis."

"I'm very pleased to meet you. I just wanted to thank you for a wonderful dinner. The fish and chips were the best I've ever tasted. Out of curiosity, who cooked what?"

Brother Charles replied, "Well, I'm the fish friar."

Father turns to the other brother and says, "Then you must be...."

"Yes, I'm afraid I'm the chip monk..."

THE SERIOUS SIDE

                               FASTING & ABSTINENCE

'Christ Himself said that His disciples would fast once He had departed' Lk. 5:35

Abstinence. The law of abstinence requires a Catholic 14 years of age until death to abstain from eating meat on Fridays in honor of the Passion of Jesus on Good Friday. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles and shellfish are permitted.

Fasting. The law of fasting requires a Catholic from the 18th Birthday (Canon 97) to the 59th Birthday (i.e. the beginning of the 60th year, a year which will be completed on the 60th birthday) to reduce the amount of food eaten from normal. The Church defines this as one meal a day, and two smaller meals which if added together would not exceed the main meal .
