SEPTEMBER 2005

Grand Knight’s Message...

Brothers,

It is now September, the children are back in school and Fall is just around the corner. As usual, the summer for our Council was busy from the get go.  I am very pleased with all Brother Knights who were able to find time this summer to help out with any of the activities that took place this summer.  Thank you my Brothers. Even though we have a small window as a breather in September, there are still a lot of projects that need to be taken care of before the holiday season begins. Please Brothers continue in helping out with the many projects and programs that are just around the corner. As it has been said many times by our Past Grand Knight Jim Stratz Jr. “Many hands make the job go easier.“

August was very busy for our Council.  It started with the Adopt a Highway Cleanup with a couple of people showing up.  Thanks to those Brothers who lent a hand and thank you Dan Bennis for Chairing this program.  There is one more cleaning of the highway this year which will be announced in October’s newsletter.  The Chicken BBQ took place on August 20th after the 4:30 PM Mass.  The turnout was low as it looked like rain all day. Last year the event was postponed to Sunday and we had a great turnout. We are looking at maybe doing the BBQ on Sunday after the 10:30 AM Mass next year. The Council was able to sell most of the leftover chicken after the morning masses. A big “Thank You” to those wives who were able to bake pies for the BBQ. The next activity for the Council was the Installation of Officers held in the church on August 21st. Our District Deputy Ron Metevier along with his sidekick District Warden Dave Hamilton were present to conduct the ceremony. The Squires #3847 and Assembly #2644 held their installation as well.  State Master Bill McCarthy did the ceremony for the Assembly.  His wife was present as well. Congratulations to the newly elected officers. Following the installation the Family of the Year and Knight of the Year were awarded. You are going to have to attend a Social Dinner to find out the Family of the Year as they were not available to attend and receive it. The Knight of the Year was awarded to our former Financial Secretary Ron Metevier.  Congratulations Ron! The last program for the Council was the Tootsie Roll Drive held the last weekend in August. We have one more weekend in October for the last drive of the year.

We start the month of September off with Camp Fatima starting September 2 through the 5.  For those looking for something to do on Sunday, come and visit those at Fatima and see what the weekend is all about.  Bring bathing suits as there is a beach with a lake to swim in.  On Tuesday September 6th we host our fall Blood Drive from 1:00PM through 8:00PM. Ron Metevier 895-2889 is Chairng this event and is looking for some help. Also, if you are able to donate blood, please be sure you do so.  DGK Dave Biron 642-8970 is Chairing the selling of 2005 State Ball Raffle Tickets. Brothers, it is important for you to get in contact with him to get your tickets. Last year’s sales were lower then we normally sell, and we donated only a small check to our Religious Education Program. The Council needs to make an effort at selling more tickets this year. Please help with this important program.

Let us all pray the Rosary as often as we can. The Power of Mary’s help cannot be denied. Please pray for our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI, World Peace, and all our military personnel around the world, our Parish Priest and Chaplain Fr. Mike Taylor, all our priests and all our Brother Knights.

A LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR

A Priest who was a good friend of the family, agreed to help celebrate a special Mass for my parents' 50th anniversary. While he was going over the service, he asked my Mother, "Are you planning to renew your vows?"  "Why, asked Mom," have they expired?"                                                                                                                                  (July edition of Readers' Digest)

                                                                 ON THE SERIOUS SIDE

A little girl had been shopping with her Mom in Wal-Mart.  She must have been 6 years old, this beautiful red haired, freckle faced image of innocence. It was pouring outside. The kind of rain that gushes over the top of rain gutters, so much in a hurry to hit the earth it has no time to flow down the spout. We all stood there under the awning and just inside the door of the Wal-Mart.

We waited, some patiently, others irritated because nature messed up their hurried day. I am always mesmerized by rainfall. I got lost in the sound and sight of the heavens washing away the dirt and dust of the world. Memories of running, splashing so carefree as a child came pouring in as a welcome reprieve from the worries of my day.

The little voice was so sweet as it broke the hypnotic trance we were all caught in "Mom, let's run through the rain," she said.

"What?" Mom asked.

"Let 's run through the rain!" She repeated.

"No, honey. We'll wait until it slows down a bit," Mom replied.

This young child waited about another minute and repeated: "Mom, let’s run through the rain"

"We'll get soaked if we do," Mom said.

"No, we won't, Mom. That's not what you said this morning," the young girl said as she tugged at her Mom's arm.

This morning? When did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?

"Don't you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said, 'If God can get us through this, he can get us through anything!"

The entire crowd stopped dead silent. I swear you couldn't hear anything but the rain. We all stood silently. No one came or left in the next few minutes.

Mom paused and thought for a moment about what she would say. Now some would laugh it off and scold her for being silly. Some might even ignore what was said. But this was a moment of affirmation in a young child's life. A time when innocent trust can be nurtured so that it will bloom into faith.

"Honey, you are absolutely right. Let's run through the rain. If GOD let's us get wet, well maybe we just needed washing," Mom said.

Then off they ran. We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they darted past the cars and yes, through the puddles. They held their shopping bags over their heads just in case. They got soaked. But they were followed by a few who screamed and laughed like children all the way to their cars.

And yes, I did. I ran. I got wet. I needed washing.

Circumstances or people can take away your material possessions, they can take away your money, and they can take away your health. But no one can ever take away your precious memories...So, don't forget to make time and take the opportunities to make memories everyday. To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven.
